Music, Rhythm and Dyslexia: What the Science Shows

Why rhythm and music keep turning up in reading research, and what that means for a child who finds reading harder than it should be.

If you have ever watched a child who struggles with reading light up the second a song comes on, you have already seen the connection this article is about. For a long time, rhythm and music sat off to the side of the classroom, treated as a nice break from the real work. Reading research keeps pointing the other way. Rhythm may be closer to the center of how reading works than we used to think.

What dyslexia affects, beyond reading itself

Dyslexia is the most studied specific learning disability, and it gets shorthanded as "trouble reading." In practice, it usually touches a specific set of skills that reading is built on:

  • Telling sounds apart. Hearing and separating the individual sounds inside a spoken word.
  • Linking letters to sounds. Connecting a written letter to the sound it stands for, and remembering how common words are spelled.
  • Taking in a whole word at a glance. Perceiving every letter in a word together, rather than one at a time.

Those skills sit underneath decoding, so when one of them is harder for a child, reading gets harder too, even when the child is just as capable as their classmates. Dyslexia often travels with broader challenges as well, including:

  • A weaker working memory for holding onto what was just read or heard
  • Trouble making everyday tasks automatic, so more of them take conscious effort
  • Real mental fatigue after an ordinary amount of reading or schoolwork
  • Attention that is easier to knock off track, especially when ADHD is also present

None of that is about how smart a child is. It reflects certain neural pathways doing the same job less efficiently, which is exactly why a different route in, one built on rhythm and timing rather than another round of the same drill, is worth trying alongside traditional reading instruction.

Why reading leans on a sense of timing

Reading looks like a job for the eyes. Underneath, a lot of it is a job for the ears and for timing. To turn a written word into meaning, a child has to catch the fast changes in speech that separate one sound from the next, hold them in the right order, and match them to letters, all in a fraction of a second.

Many children with dyslexia find those quick, rhythmic changes in sound harder to track. When that timing takes extra effort, decoding words costs more energy, and reading feels slower and heavier than it should. Rhythm is timing a child can hear and feel, which is part of why it keeps showing up in the research.

Reading and music share the same wiring

Brain imaging has mapped a small network that language depends on. Two regions, usually on the left side of the brain, do much of the work: one helps produce speech, the other helps make sense of the sounds coming in. A bundle of fibers called the arcuate fasciculus carries information between them, and pulls in the brain’s visual area once letters enter the picture. In many people with dyslexia, information moves along that pathway less efficiently.

Here is the part that caught researchers’ attention. When a musician reads a score, keeps a beat, or tells two notes apart, they lean on many of the same regions. Music and language are not filed in separate rooms of the brain. They share a lot of the same wiring, and that wiring runs straight through the pathway that tends to be less efficient in dyslexia.

What rhythm practice can strengthen

Because of that overlap, researchers have studied what happens when children with dyslexia get regular, playful practice with rhythm and music. Several strands of work point in a consistent direction, toward the skills that sit underneath reading:

  • Phonological awareness, the ability to hear and pull apart the sounds inside words.
  • Reading fluency and speed, so decoding takes less effort and frees up attention for meaning.
  • Verbal working memory, holding on to words just read or heard long enough to make sense of a sentence.
  • Auditory attention, tuning in to the sounds that matter and tuning out the rest.

None of this is a shortcut around learning to read. It is a way of shoring up the systems reading rests on, so the everyday work of decoding has firmer ground to stand on.

More than reading: confidence and the will to keep going

Rhythm has one more thing going for it that a worksheet does not. A melody or a beat can reach a child before any reading skill is in place. It can settle a restless mind or spark the urge to move, and it tends to feel like play rather than practice.

That matters more than it sounds. A child who dreads reading practice does less of it. A child who enjoys the daily habit keeps at it, and steady practice is what quietly builds skill over months. For a lot of families, the biggest change is not a test score. It is a child who stops dreading reading time and starts looking forward to it.

What the research on Poppins actually shows

Poppins Learning grew out of this line of research. It was built with neuroscientists, including Dr. Michel Habib, and it puts rhythm and music at the heart of daily reading practice rather than bolting them on as an extra.

It has been studied in two randomized clinical trials, and being clear about what each one shows matters as much as the headline.

  • The published trial (n=151). In a randomized controlled trial published in Scientific Reports, a Nature Portfolio journal, 2025, children who practiced with Poppins made gains in reading fluency and reading speed compared with a control game. In candor: the study’s pre-registered primary measure, reading made-up words, did not separate from the control, while the fluency and speed measures did (about +5.05 and +5.44 words, p < 0.05).
  • The larger trial (n=306). A second, larger trial compared Poppins plus weekly reading-specialist sessions against weekly sessions alone. It is registered and its results are final, but it has not yet been peer-reviewed or published, so we describe it as tested, never "published."

That second study is the one we find most honest to point to, because it was measured against real, high-quality reading support rather than a waitlist or a placebo app. Children who added Poppins to their weekly sessions progressed further than children who had the weekly sessions alone. The effect was additive. Poppins did not replace the specialist, it multiplied the time a child spent practicing the right way, and roughly doubled the reading progress over the study window.

To be plain about it: Poppins Learning is not a medical device and it does not treat or cure dyslexia. Dyslexia in the U.S. is recognized as a specific learning disability under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), an educational difference, not a disease.
