Reading is a timing problem before it is a spelling problem. Here is the neuroscience of rhythm and reading, and how it shaped the way Poppins Learning is built.
Most reading programs work on the surface: the letters, the sounds, the spelling rules. But a growing body of neuroscience points somewhere deeper. Before reading is a spelling problem, it is a timing problem, and that is exactly where a rhythm-based practice like Poppins Learning is designed to help.
Why reading is a timing problem in the brain
To read a word, the brain has to line up sound and meaning in a fraction of a second. It has to catch the fast changes in speech that separate one syllable from the next, hold them in order, and map them onto letters. That work depends on precise neural timing.
Researchers have long noticed that many children with dyslexia find those rapid, rhythmic changes in sound harder to track. Brain-imaging studies point to reduced coordination along the arcuate fasciculus, a white-matter pathway that connects the brain’s hearing and language regions. When that timing is off, decoding the stream of speech into words takes more effort, and reading feels slower and heavier than it should.
The research behind rhythm and reading
This is not a hunch. For decades, neuroscientists including Dr. Michel Habib, Dr. Charline Grossard and Dr. David Cohen have studied how rhythm perception and synchronization engage the same pathways the brain uses for speech and reading. Their work informed the design of Poppins Learning: a daily practice that pairs rhythm and music with multisensory reading exercises, so a child trains timing and reading skills at the same time.
Poppins Learning is not a medical device and it does not treat or cure dyslexia. It is an educational reading practice, built with neuroscientists, that is designed around how children with dyslexia actually learn. Dyslexia in the U.S. is recognized as a specific learning disability under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), an educational difference, not a disease.
What the studies actually found
Poppins Learning has been studied in two randomized clinical trials. Being precise about what each one shows matters as much as the headline.
- The published trial (n=151). In a randomized controlled trial published in Scientific Reports, a Nature Portfolio journal, 2025, children who practiced with Poppins showed gains in reading fluency and reading speed compared with a control game. In candor: the study’s pre-registered primary measure (reading made-up words) did not separate from the control, while the reading-fluency and speed measures did (about +5.05 and +5.44 words, p < 0.05).
- The larger trial (n=306). A second, larger randomized trial compared Poppins plus weekly reading-specialist sessions against weekly sessions alone. It is registered and its results are final, but it has not yet been peer-reviewed or published, so we describe it as tested, never "published."
That second trial is the one we find most honest to talk about, because the comparison was against real, high-quality care rather than a waitlist or a placebo app. Children who added Poppins to weekly specialist sessions progressed further than children who had the weekly sessions alone. The effect was additive: Poppins did not replace the specialist, it multiplied the time a child spent practicing the right way, and roughly doubled the reading progress over the study window.
From the lab to a daily habit at home
Science only helps a child if they actually do it, day after day. That is why Poppins Learning is built as a game a child returns to on their own, in short sessions of about 20 minutes. The rhythm is the point and also the hook: it makes the practice feel like play while it trains the timing that reading depends on.
